The Garden Apartment

The local foods movement/ farmers markets

Consider this: If you’re anything like most Americans, your grocery cart’s passport is more impressive than your own—with food traveling an average of 1500-2000 miles to reach our plates. As worldly as our diets sound, the transportation and mass-production of food has many implications on the environment, the nutritional value of American diets, and the livelihood of the small farmer.
And now, consider this: When you choose to eat foods grown and produced in your local area or region, you have the opportunity to form a direct relationship with farmers and other food producers. You can ask important questions about how your vegetables were grown and your meat was raised. Furthermore, because your food doesn’t need to be prematurely picked or treated with chemicals in order to survive long road trips, it will be fresher, taste better, and consequently maintain more of its nutritional value. Finally, your food dollars go directly into your own local community — supporting small farmers and producers.

Everyone who eats, consumers, community members

Raise awareness about issues surrounding the food we eat
Encourage people to shop at farmers markets and eat locally produced foods
Empower consumers to be in control of their food choices through direct relationships with local farmers
Encourage people to put their food dollars into the local economy

Suggested copy to be included in poster design:
The average food product in your grocery store has travelled 1500-2000 miles to get to your shopping cart. Reduce the environmental implications of your food’s transport, and support your local economy, by purchasing locally grown and raised food at your community farmers market. Visit sustainabletable.org for more information on regional food sources.
Additional details:
Designers are encouraged to develop additional copy to support their concept.
